3:194Our Lord, give us what You have promised us through Your apostles, and do not disgrace us on the Day of Resurrection. Indeed You do not break Your promise.’

3:195Then their Lord answered them, ‘I do not waste the work of any worker among you, whether male or female; you are all on the same footing. So those who migrated and were expelled from their homes, and were tormented in My way, and those who fought and were killed—I will surely absolve them of their misdeeds and I will admit them into gardens with streams running in them, as a reward from Allah, and Allah—with Him is the best of rewards.’1

3:196Never be misled by the bustle of the faithless in the towns.2

3:197It is a trivial enjoyment; then their refuge is hell, and it is an evil resting place.

3:198But those who are wary of their Lord—for them shall be gardens with streams running in them, to remain in them [forever], a hospitality from Allah; and what is with Allah is better for the pious.

3:199Indeed among the People of the Book there are some who have faith in Allah and in what has been sent down to you, and in what has been sent down to them. Humble toward Allah, they do not sell the signs of Allah for a paltry gain. They shall have their reward near their Lord; indeed Allah is swift at reckoning.3

3:200O you who have faith! Be patient, stand firm, and close [your] ranks, and be wary of Allah so that you may be felicitous.

Commentary on this passage

Verse 195

1.The Holy Quran has clarified in Surah Ale-Imran about the battle, patience, fear of god and covenant of Allah. And after that drawn our attention towards clarification of guidance observing that believers should pay full attention towards it. If they are turned out of their houses, or country or join in battle or are martyred in war, they should not care of it. They have to endure all this in the way of Allah and its result is good for him in the hereafter. They should not become anxious on the sight of fleeting worldly comforts as the end is very severe. A wise man does not see his present condition but keeps an eye on the conclusion.

Verse 198

2.Fear of god is the biggest sign of Islam. The Holy book begins with piety in people and at every step mentions about the fear of god, as the acceptance of deeds are connected with fear of god and is the cause of entry in Paradise. The affliction is terminated on account of fear of God and it leads to innumerable rewards. The association of Allah is for the godfearing. Successful achievement is the part of fear of god. Imam Ja’far as-Sadiq (a.s.) has praised extensively, the fear of god and said - whatever Allah has commanded for, you should not leave it and as to whatever he has prohibited from, you should not do it. Patience with fear of God and teaching of mutual reciprocation is with patience and along with this full preparation of war with infidels is the best way of achieving success in life.’

Explanations of words and phrases in these verses

  1. 1

Hijral - To volunlarily leave ones hometown for the sake ofislam and 10 be made an alien. If the establishment of Islamic signs is not possible in an infidel country it is obligatory to do Hijrat from there so that one fulfils Islamic rites. It is surprising that for a few days of comfort some people leave their countries and go to settle in places where it is practically impossible to fulfill Islamic duties. This is a haraam act.

  2. 2

The infidels keep going around and also cause the moments of nations but it does not mean that they are the favorites of the Almighty, and the masters of the Hereafter.

  3. 3

Apparently it implies Negus and Abdullah Ibne Salam, but actually the rule is general and there is no discrimination between people as regards divine mercy, but they should deserve it. Divine Mercy is there whenever there is capability.

  4. Benefit

The Ayats 196-197 indicate that the secret of the infidels’ comfort and the believers’ difficulties is that the lifespan of this world is very short and after this there is prolonged punishment of Hell.

Also a believer has to earn only from Islamic ways while the infidel has no such restriction. So their affluence is not surprising.
