Madinan200 verses

3:109To Allah belongs whatever there is in the heavens and the earth, and to Allah all matters are returned.

3:110You are the best nation [ever] brought forth for mankind: you bid what is right and forbid what is wrong, and have faith in Allah. And if the People of the Book had believed, it would have been better for them. Among them [some] are faithful, but most of them are transgressors.12

3:111They will never do you any harm, except for some hurt; and if they fight you, they will turn their backs [to flee], then they will not be helped.

3:112Wherever they are found, abasement is stamped upon them, except for an asylum from Allah and an asylum from the people. They have earned the wrath of Allah, and poverty has been stamped upon them. That, because they would deny the signs of Allah and kill the prophets unjustly. That, because they would disobey and commit transgression.3

3:113Yet they are not all alike. Among the People of the Book is an upright nation; they recite Allah’s signs in the watches of the night and prostrate.

3:114They have faith in Allah and the Last Day, and bid what is right and forbid what is wrong, and they are active in [performing] good deeds. Those are among the righteous.

3:115Whatever good they do, they will not go unappreciated for it, and Allah knows well the Godwary.

Commentary on this passage

Verse 110

1.Allah has created the followers of Islam as the best nation and has given three signs for its distinction : (i) Work for the benefit of others. (ii) Invite the people towards good. (iii) And prevent them from evil. All this should have the sentiment of faith in Allah. If it is not so, they will not be termed as the best nation and whoever believes in it, it is certainly better for him. That is why some traditions indicate towards the members of the Prophet’s family as they spent their lives inviting people towards goodness and forbidding evil. They even advised their killers to do good and deterred even their closest friends from evil.

Verse 111

2.This is good news for the believers: The harm of the Jews is nothing more than words. They have no courage to fight with the Muslims. How I wish that Muslims would believe in Quran and fight them instead of being frightened into making peace with them; and bring the promise of Quran in public view. But they themselves are one of them. We can’t hope any more good from them.

Verse 112

3.This argument is not only for Jews but for all the enemies of Islam. The Jews have increased their atrocities to such an extent that it is their sole mission to slay the virtuous and they do not require any excuse for it.

Footnotes

Explanations of words and phrases in these verses

  1. 1

Some people consider that Kaane Taamma and KhaireUmmat is present tense that your presence is in the wellbeing of the nation. According to others it is an incomplete tense and only some people are addressed therein. Those whose honor is in working for humanity, exhorting them to do good and restraining than from evil.

  2. 2

It denotes people like Abdullah Bin Salam.

  3. 3

Commentators of Quran have always differed regarding the degradation of the Jews. They have explained it according to the conditions prevailing at their time. However, the Jews are debased from the aspect of their principles of life and code of ethics. They are also debased in society. They are hardly worth anything. Israel is not a Jewish kingdom, it is a base and puppet of America. If America withdraws support, it will not survive. As mentioned in a prophecy of the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.s.) that in the last period of the world a large scale measure of Jews will occur.

  4. Benefit

The verse 110 explains the Khair-e-Ummat to signify Amr bil Ma’roof and Nahy Anil Munkar. And the enjoining and discouraging is accorded more importance than belief. Thus the well being of the Muslim society depends on this and the belief is also based on it. Otherwise a belief without these two is merely verbal claim. It is no real value.
