29:1Alif, Lam, Meem.

29:2Do the people suppose that they will be let off because they say, ‘We have faith,’ and they will not be tested?

29:3Certainly We tested those who were before them. So Allah shall surely ascertain those who are truthful, and He shall surely ascertain the liars.

29:4Do those who commit misdeeds suppose that they can outmaneuver Us? Evil is the judgement that they make.

29:5Whoever expects to encounter Allah [should know that] Allah’s [appointed] time will indeed come, and He is the All-hearing, the All-knowing.

Commentary on this passage

Verse 3

2.Obviously Allah is not in need of any trial in His own knowledge. Allah knows the condition of all. This trial is for only the fulfil1ment of a condition so that people cannot ridicule at His decision and can experiment and decide their behaviour at the time of trouble and the condition of the sacrifice in the way of Allah. Otherwise He is not ignorant of anything and nobody can escape from this.

Explanations of words and phrases in these verses

  1. Benefit

We should know that Surah Ankaboot is wholly a Meccan Surah and the Jihad mentioned in it is not its actual sense and neither is the trial connected to the Hijrat. It is a general test which the Muslim were undergoing in Mecca.
