Makkan88 verses
28:78He said, ‘I have indeed been given [all] this because of the knowledge that I have.’ Did he not know that Allah had already destroyed before him some of the generations who were more powerful than him and greater in amassing [wealth]? The guilty will not be questioned about their sins.*
28:79So he emerged before his people in his finery. Those who desired the life of the world said, ‘We wish we had like what Korah has been given! Indeed he is greatly fortunate.’1
28:80Those who were given knowledge said [to them], ‘Woe to you! Allah’s reward is better for someone who has faith and acts righteously, and no one will receive it except the patient.’
28:81So We caused the earth to swallow him and his house, and he had no party that might protect him from Allah, nor could he rescue himself.2
28:82By dawn those who longed to be in his place the day before were saying, ‘Don’t you see that Allah expands the provision for whomever He wishes of His servants, and tightens it? Had Allah not shown us favour, He might have made the earth swallow us too. Don’t you see that the faithless do not prosper?’
28:83This is the abode of the Hereafter, which We shall grant to those who do not desire to domineer in the earth nor to cause corruption, and the outcome will be in favour of the Godwary.
28:84Whoever brings virtue shall receive [a reward] better than it, but whoever brings vice—those who commit misdeeds shall not be requited except for what they used to do.

Commentary on this passage
Verse 82
1.A man accepts his ignorance but after experience. this is the greatest weakness of his knowledge. Allah did not give wealth to the devotees of Moosa (a.s.) like Qaroon. Then Allah knows about the thoughts and the words. As it happens when they saw other people better than themselves in comparison, they raised an objection on mercy of Allah and later when Qaroon sank in to the ground, they felt guilty and thanked Allah and said it is very well, that Allah has not given us wealth otherwise we would also suffer. We come to know clearly that a man should be pleased on divine decree and should think whatever Allah does is good for us. Allah does not want loss for his people but wants benefit for them. A man should not be displeased with His decision and complain. Thus it is stated in traditions that one who complains regarding Divine decision, thinks that Allah is unjust and people are higher than He, and this is absolutely forbidden for grandeur of Islam and faith.

Benefit
The absence of the question in the 78th ayat may be a question as a clarification. Or it is the beginning part of Qiyamat. Otherwise question and answer is necessary.
- 1
Showing off the ornaments is a human weakness and after this the weakness of faith is that he becomes heedless of the Hereafter and begins to desire these worldly embellishments, He forgets the value of his belief and his good deeds, He does not remember that something would be given to him in the Hereafter as well, Obviously when the companions of Moosa (a.s.) could have such weak faith, what can we say of ordinary people? They thus not only declared the weakness of their faith; they also destroyed the notion of the infallibility of companions. Thus companionship of a prophet is not a sufficient proof of one’s of integrity till we have not examined his personal character.
- 2
Please note the Qaroon was a relative of Moos a (a.s.) as well as his companion. But when he deviated from the path of belief and good deeds and in spite of the persuasion of Moosa (a.s.) he did not pay Zakat, the Almighty Allah caused him to be swallowed by the earth along with his wealth. This incident is edifying to all those who do not pay Khums and Zakat.
