Verses 8–18

24. An-Noor · The Light

Madinan64 verses

24:8The punishment shall be averted from her by her testifying with four oaths [sworn] by Allah that he is indeed lying,

24:9and a fifth [oath] that Allah’s wrath shall be upon her if he were stating the truth.

24:10Were it not for Allah’s grace and His mercy upon you, and that Allah is all-clement, all-wise....

24:11Indeed those who initiated the calumny are a group from among yourselves. Do not suppose it is bad thing for you. No, it is for your good. Each man among them bears [the onus for] his share in the sin, and as for him who assumed its major burden from among them, there is a great punishment for him.*1

24:12When you [first] heard about it, why did not the faithful, men and women, think well of their folks, and say, ‘This is an obvious calumny’?2

24:13Why did they not bring four witnesses to it? So when they could not bring the witnesses, they are liars in Allah’s sight.

24:14Were it not for Allah’s grace and His mercy upon you in this world and the Hereafter, there would have befallen you a great punishment for what you ventured into,

24:15when you were receiving it on your tongues, and were mouthing something of which you had no knowledge, supposing it to be a light matter, while it was a grave [matter] with Allah.

24:16And why did you not, when you heard it, say, ‘It is not for us to say such a thing. [O Allah!] You are immaculate! This is a monstrous calumny!’3

24:17Allah advises you lest you should ever repeat the like of it, should you be faithful.

24:18Allah clarifies the signs for you, and Allah is all-knowing, all-wise.

Commentary on this passage

Verse 11

1.A large number of commentators and scholars have quoted this event, that the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.s.) drew lots while going for Jihad against Bani Mustaliq. Ayesha’s name came to go along with him so the Prophet (s.a.w.s.) took her with him. Later on when he came back winning the battle they halted at a place on the way and Ayesha went far away to answer the call of Nature and the caravan departed from there and Ayesha remained, left all alone. After some time Safwan Bin Mo’atal came there and he saw her alone in the desert. He made her sit on his she camel while he himself pulled the bridle of the camel and walked but Abdullah Bin Ubayy, a hypocrite started propaganda that they have illegitimate relation and their character has become doubtful. His intention was to hurt the feelings of Prophet (s.a.w.s.) and disgrace him before the people. It is clear that this matter was concerned with the honour of the Prophet (s.a.w.s.). That is why Allah explained this matter and warned them about His chastisement again and again, so that they would come to their senses and would not spread rumor about Holy Prophet (s.a.w.s.) next time. The wife of the Prophet may be a polytheist but she cannot be an adultress. The wife of the Prophet Nuh (a.s.) was guilty because she called him insane. Lut’s wife was giving the sign to her people for misdeeds with the guests but none of the women were committing fornication.

Footnotes

Explanations of words and phrases in these verses

  1. Benefit

The 11th ayat shows that sometimes the propaganda of the opponents is beneficial and it unveils many realities.

  2. 1

Afak -A great falsehood. Asbah - A group. Alladi Tawalla Kubra - One who took the greatest pan in alleging. That is Abdullah bin Ubayy, the hypocrite.

  3. 2

The believers are considered one person and that is why their transactions and affairs are considered personal. It is correct that a Muslim can neither testify for the correctness of an event or deny it if he has no knowledge about it,. But practically he should act as if it is not true, till it is proved authentic.

  4. 3

If someone is implicated for adultery the first duty is to justify it. If it is not possible we must at least not repeat it with our tongue. Because dreadful punishment awaits the scandalmongers in this world and the hereafter.

  5. Benefit

The gist of ayat 20 is that if this bounty had not been there people would have been forced into sins. The problems would have destroyed them and the system of life would have gone awry due to ignorance.
