2:253These are the apostles, some of whom We gave an advantage over others: of them are those to whom Allah spoke and some of them He raised in rank, and We gave Jesus, son of Mary, manifest proofs and strengthened him with the Holy Spirit. Had Allah wished, those who succeeded them would not have fought one another after the manifest proofs had come to them. But they differed. So there were among them those who had faith and there were among them those who were faithless, and had Allah wished, they would not have fought one another; but Allah does whatever He desires.1

2:254O you who have faith! Spend out of what We have provided you before there comes a day on which there will be no bargaining, neither friendship, nor intercession. And the faithless—they are the wrongdoers.2

2:255Allah—there is no god except Him—is the Living One, the All-sustainer. Neither drowsiness befalls Him nor sleep. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Who is it that may intercede with Him except with His permission? He knows what is before them and what is behind them, and they do not comprehend anything of His knowledge except what He wishes. His seat embraces the heavens and the earth and He is not wearied by their preservation, and He is the All-exalted, the All-supreme.34

2:256There is no compulsion in religion: rectitude has become distinct from error. So one who disavows fake deities and has faith in Allah has held fast to the firmest handle for which there is no breaking; and Allah is all-hearing, all-knowing.56

Commentary on this passage

Verse 253

1.After Allah granted the title of Mursalin to his beloved Prophet (s.a.w.s.) He mentioned his absolute greatness and distinctive features. It means that all are same in prophethood and messengership and different in showing the perfections and due to this the Prophethood or messengership is not hurt. Apparently when all Apostles are not same, then how can all companions and all Muslims or all years and days can be equal?

2.It is an indication that Allah has not used force and left the people on their own. If Allah had been firm even Iblees had not refused to do sajdah. But in this way good and bad, reward and punishment all would have become meaningless.

Verse 254

3.Islam has time and again emphasized on charity and drawn our attention that whatever you have is not yours but it is the sustenance of Allah. So spend it in the way of Allah otherwise no one would help you in the hereafter.

Verse 255

4.This is the beginning of the Throne verse which has many distinctions in traditions. It describes Allah’s grandeur and authority with the vastness of knowledge and power. It specially mentions two things: (i) He is always awake, and is protecting the Universe. Except for Him there cannot be a protector. He does not even get tired due to this protection. He sees everyone and hears everyone. (ii) There is no kind of compulsion in religion. Religion is the name of beliefs and there cannot be compulsion in beliefs. And after the fact have been made clear there is no need of compulsion either. Now there would only be accounting and that’s all. Those who took Allah as their guardian, will remain in the world of lights and those who made the evil powers their guardian, will end up in Hell and it is forever. The guardianship of idol is not only a bad deed but it is also a proof of infidelity.

  5. 5

It is a fact that there is no compulsion in Islam and it is also a command. That Muslims should not behave like this.

  6. 6

Anything that instigates towards rebellion and disobedience. Benefit: In the 255th ayat sinate is preferred to Nawm (sleep) due to nature and the comparison to Akhaz points towards the overpowering of sleep. Although in negation the greater things is mentioned before the lesser one. That forget sleep, He is not even affected by drowsiness.

  7. Benefit

It should be clear that there is no slope of force and compulsion in Islam. First of all after the announcement of the facts there is no sense in using force and secondly religion is the name of belief and recognition and force is not possible in matters of belief. Islam allows Jihad only on three occasions. (i) For eradicating idol worship since it is not any religious school, it is an open insult to humanity. (ii) To defend Islam. (iii) For gaining complete freedom of religion propagation so that our message could be announced clearly.
