2:165Among the people are those who set up compeers besides Allah, loving them as if loving Allah—but the faithful have a more ardent love for Allah—though the wrongdoers will see, when they sight the punishment, that power, altogether, belongs to Allah, and that Allah is severe in punishment.1
2:166When those who were followed will disown the followers, and they will sight the punishment while all their means of recourse will be cut off,2
2:167and when the followers will say, ‘Had there been another turn for us, we would disown them as they disown us [now]!’ Thus shall Allah show them their deeds as regrets for themselves, and they shall not leave the Fire.3
2:168O mankind! Eat of what is lawful and pure in the earth, and do not follow in Satan’s steps. Indeed, he is your manifest enemy.4
2:169He only prompts you to [commit] evil and indecent acts, and that you attribute to Allah what you do not know.5
2:170When they are told, ‘Follow what Allah has sent down,’ they say, ‘No, We will follow what we have found our fathers following.’ What, even if their fathers neither exercised their reason nor were guided?!
2:171The parable of the faithless is that of someone who shouts after that which does not hear [anything] except a call and cry: deaf, dumb, and blind, they do not exercise their reason.
2:172O you who have faith! Eat of the good things We have provided you, and thank Allah, if it is Him that you worship.

Commentary on this passage
Verse 167
1.It is easy to mislead people for the worldly desires and status but its result is very severe. The Holy Quran has described the scene vividly that the leaders will say that they are fed up of their followers and their disciples would wish they had kept aloof from them in the world. The connections would have been severed and the severe chastisement of Allah will be facing them and there will not be any possibility even to come out of hell. That in spite of this dislike for each other they would have to remain in hell together.
Verse 168
2.Islam is the religion of cleanliness and purity. It permits only those things for us that are pure and clean. There is a little difference between halaal and Tayyib; the first one denotes all those things that arc lawful even though it might not be actually lawful and Tayyib is that thing which is lawful in the true sense also. The word of halaal with tayyib is an open invitation of precaution.
Verse 170
3.This nature is found in every age that some people consider the teachings of their forefathers to be more important than the commands of Allah and the Prophet. They do not even know that their forefathers were not having even as much sense and understanding as they have. They prefer their own intelligence over that of their forefathers in every matter. It is only in the matter of religion that they ignore their own reason and follow the rules and customs of their forefathers. The Holy Quran has severely criticized this habit and called such people by appellations of senseless, animal, blind, deaf and dumb and one eligible for divine chastisement.
Verse 172
4.Religion of Islam has clarified about all the matters of life and also explained the questions regarding eating and drinking and explained the misunderstandings of the past. It has also criticized those whose policy is to forgo the pleasures and they do not even use the halal and pure foods and it has also blamed those who are ready even to eat forbidden things. After that it has indicated towards a law of helplessness which is the most important principles of Islam and it has a sort of control on every type of law. That wherever there is helplessness and compulsion. Islam is ready to remove every obligation and forbidding law provided the man does not have an evil intention and he is showing himself to be helpless while actually he is attracted towards it and even at the time of using he must not exceed the necessary limit, he should remain within the limits. In the present age those who express helplessness in eating forbidden things should pay attention to these two conditions. They should remember that even at the time of using the forbidden thing they should consider it unacceptable and they must not feel pleasure in it which is the right way of compulsion. They must not also cross the limits of necessity otherwise Allah is aware of the hidden secrets and the heart’s intention. In the present age some people consider it necessary to have tea etc. at the polytheists though there is no sort of compulsion in having tea, which Allah knows well.
