Makkan128 verses

16:94Do not make your oaths a means of [mutual] deceit among yourselves, lest feet should stumble after being steady and [lest] you suffer ill for barring from the way of Allah and face a great punishment.1

16:95Do not sell Allah’s covenants for a paltry gain. Indeed, what is with Allah is better for you, should you know.

16:96That which is with you will be spent [and gone], but what is with Allah shall last, and We will surely pay the patient their reward by the best of what they used to do.

16:97Whoever acts righteously, [whether] male or female, should he be faithful, We shall revive him with a good life and pay them their reward by the best of what they used to do.23

16:98When you recite the Quran, seek the protection of Allah against the outcast Satan.

16:99Indeed he does not have any authority over those who have faith and put their trust in their Lord.

16:100His authority is only over those who befriend him and those who make him a partner [of Allah].

16:101When We change a sign for another in its stead—and Allah knows best what He sends down—they say, ‘You are indeed a fabricator.’ Indeed, most of them do not know.

16:102Say, the Holy Spirit has brought it down duly from your Lord to fortify those who have faith and as guidance and good news for the Muslims.

Commentary on this passage

Verse 96

1.For the high ranking of human’s worry, Allah has supplied the provisions and one of these provisions is the faith of Resurrection Day. As a natural inherent, a man is fond of interest and he is not ready to think anything about except benefit and he is not ready to do any work until he finds any profit in the work. Allah considered this inherent quality for the benefit and announced. Do not do any work without profit and said Do not keep this benefit limited for the worldly comforts but on the contrary extend this benefit for the hereafter. As these worldly benefits will be destroyed but the benefit of the Resurrection Day will remain forever. When the man understands this point he becomes tactical like Hurr Ibne Yazeed Riyahi and when a person becomes unmindful from this point he acts like Umar Bin Sa’ad. The difference between the two is only with regard to the Resurrection Day. These people like worldly pleasure and materialism as opposed to it.

Verse 102

2.Jibreel (a.s.) is known as the Holy spirit because he brought the Holy book, the Quran and he was the messenger of Allah.

Footnotes

Explanations of words and phrases in these verses

  1. Benefit

The Quranic example indicates that breaking oath is a feminine act bereft of manliness. We should consider the actions of the ruler of Shaam after signing of peace treaty in the light of this.

  2. 1

Breaking of oaths is repeatedly mentioned in these ayats and every time a new example is presented. Once it says that you must not break oath because you have appointed Allah as your trustee. Then it says that Allah tests you through your failure to honour your vows. You must assure that you do not fail in this test. Mention is also made of the risk of the deviation of other people, that in this way you shal1 become a person who prevents people from the divine path.

  3. 2

Although Hayaat-eTayyiba denotes the life of Paradise we can apply it to the life of the special one of Allah which was based on their untainted thoughts and pondering.

  4. 3

The standard for recompense is good actions. Rather it is related to the best of the deed of one’s whole life. And this is valid for all the obediences of the Almighty Allah.

  5. Benefit

‘Maa indallaah’ does not only denotes charity, alms and endowments and neither are they based on divine treasures. If man by his good deeds can become ‘Maa indallaah’ he can obtain an everlasting life, otherwise the tendency of universe is to lead towards annihilation. And here everything is heading towards destruction. Birth anniversary is not an addition in the knots of a string, it indicates that a year of our life has passed away.
