13. Ar-Ra'd · The Thunder

Madinan43 verses

بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

الٓمٓر ۚ تِلْكَ ءَايَٰتُ ٱلْكِتَٰبِ ۗ وَٱلَّذِىٓ أُنزِلَ إِلَيْكَ مِن رَّبِّكَ ٱلْحَقُّ وَلَٰكِنَّ أَكْثَرَ ٱلنَّاسِ لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ

13:1Alif, Lam, Mim, Ra. These are the signs of the Book. That which has been sent down to you from your Lord is the truth, but most people do not believe [in it].

ٱللَّهُ ٱلَّذِى رَفَعَ ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ بِغَيْرِ عَمَدٍۢ تَرَوْنَهَا ۖ ثُمَّ ٱسْتَوَىٰ عَلَى ٱلْعَرْشِ ۖ وَسَخَّرَ ٱلشَّمْسَ وَٱلْقَمَرَ ۖ كُلٌّۭ يَجْرِى لِأَجَلٍۢ مُّسَمًّۭى ۚ يُدَبِّرُ ٱلْأَمْرَ يُفَصِّلُ ٱلْءَايَٰتِ لَعَلَّكُم بِلِقَآءِ رَبِّكُمْ تُوقِنُونَ

13:2It is Allah who raised the heavens without any pillars that you see, and then presided over the Throne. He disposed the sun and the moon, each moving for a specified term. He directs the command, [and] elaborates the signs that you may be certain of encountering your Lord.1

وَهُوَ ٱلَّذِى مَدَّ ٱلْأَرْضَ وَجَعَلَ فِيهَا رَوَٰسِىَ وَأَنْهَٰرًۭا ۖ وَمِن كُلِّ ٱلثَّمَرَٰتِ جَعَلَ فِيهَا زَوْجَيْنِ ٱثْنَيْنِ ۖ يُغْشِى ٱلَّيْلَ ٱلنَّهَارَ ۚ إِنَّ فِى ذَٰلِكَ لَءَايَٰتٍۢ لِّقَوْمٍۢ يَتَفَكَّرُونَ

13:3It is He who has spread out the earth and set in it firm mountains and streams, and of every fruit in it He has made two kinds. He draws the night’s cover over the day. There are indeed signs in that for a people who reflect.2

وَفِى ٱلْأَرْضِ قِطَعٌۭ مُّتَجَٰوِرَٰتٌۭ وَجَنَّٰتٌۭ مِّنْ أَعْنَٰبٍۢ وَزَرْعٌۭ وَنَخِيلٌۭ صِنْوَانٌۭ وَغَيْرُ صِنْوَانٍۢ يُسْقَىٰ بِمَآءٍۢ وَٰحِدٍۢ وَنُفَضِّلُ بَعْضَهَا عَلَىٰ بَعْضٍۢ فِى ٱلْأُكُلِ ۚ إِنَّ فِى ذَٰلِكَ لَءَايَٰتٍۢ لِّقَوْمٍۢ يَعْقِلُونَ

13:4In the earth are neighbouring terrains [of diverse kinds] and vineyards, farms, and date palms growing from the same root and from diverse roots, [all] irrigated by the same water, and We give some of them an advantage over others in flavour. There are indeed signs in that for people who exercise their reason.34

۞ وَإِن تَعْجَبْ فَعَجَبٌۭ قَوْلُهُمْ أَءِذَا كُنَّا تُرَٰبًا أَءِنَّا لَفِى خَلْقٍۢ جَدِيدٍ ۗ أُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ بِرَبِّهِمْ ۖ وَأُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ ٱلْأَغْلَٰلُ فِىٓ أَعْنَاقِهِمْ ۖ وَأُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ أَصْحَٰبُ ٱلنَّارِ ۖ هُمْ فِيهَا خَٰلِدُونَ

13:5If you are to wonder [at anything], then wonderful is their remark, ‘When we have become dust, shall we be [ushered] into a new creation?’ They are the ones who defy their Lord; they shall have iron collars around their necks, they shall be the inhabitants of the Fire, and they shall remain in it [forever].56

Tafsir

Commentary on this passage

Verse 2

1.Since thousands of years the Sun completes its revolution in a year and the moon completes in a month and there is no difference in it. This is a clear sign that Allah has power over all these things and if by chance there is a minor change in the theory of creation, it is ridiculous.

Verse 3

2.The word expand does not mean that the earth is not round because when anything becomes lengthy and broad it looks flat instead of being round and there is a difference between the two.

3.It is proved in modern times that vegetables also have sexes. Sometimes they belong to the same tree and sometimes they are of a different tree like date plam. The pollens of one are transferred to the other by wind and there is no mistake because it is the work of the Almighty.

Verse 4

4.The different kinds of vegetables on the earth and different kinds of fish in the sea prove that there is an invisible power that runs the whole universe otherwise it is impossible to create the various creatures in the condition of oneness.

Explanations of words and phrases in these verses

  1. Benefit

    Alif Laam Mim Raa has come only in this Surah and it is the compound of Alif Laam Mim and Alif Laam Raa. This indicates that the meanings of both types of Surahs have been brought together here.

    If this pronoun refers to the heavens it means that there is no hidden or apparent pillar in skies. If it refers to ‘Amad’ it indicates that pillars are there but they are not visible.

    Rawaasi indicates a stable and a solid thing, but it is mostly used for mountains. That if this word is used in isolation it will refer to a mountain. And the function of stable mountains is to keep the earth fixed in its place, and that it should not shake unusually. The relation of the streams to mountains is that streams originate from the mountains containing the water from the mountain source.

    ‘Sanwaan’- Trees having a single root. Ghair Sanwaan are those whose Toots are separate.

    ‘Okal’- Every kind of eatable.

    Aghlaal is the plural of ‘Ghul’. It is a rope with which hands are tied behind ones neck.

    Thrice repeating the word ‘Oolaaek’ indicates the divine anger and fury. that these people are talking absolute nonsense.

  8. Benefit

    It should be clear that though in the present age the matter of sexes in the plant kingdom is well-known it was first of all announced by the Holy Quran.
