11:118Had your Lord wished, He would have made mankind one community; but they continue to differ,1

11:119except those on whom your Lord has mercy—and that is why He created them—and the word of your Lord has been fulfilled: ‘I will surely fill hell with jinn and humans, all together!’2

11:120Whatever We relate to you of the accounts of the apostles are those by which We strengthen your heart, and there has come to you in this [surah] the truth and an advice and admonition for the faithful.3

11:121Say to those who do not have faith, ‘Act according to your ability; we too are acting.

11:122And wait! We too are waiting.’

11:123To Allah belongs the Unseen of the heavens and the earth, and to Him all matters are returned. So worship Him and trust in Him. Your Lord is not oblivious of what you do.

Commentary on this passage

Verse 118

1.Listening this blessed verse of Holy Quran, the hearts become restless. If Allah would accept, the people of whole world would get salvation from all kinds of troubles. But people do not think that humanity would he over in this way and they would be disappointed from freedom and worries. Today they put restrain on their freedom and they cry out for help. This is the proof that people want to become free and become anxious for freedom. Yes, if a person becomes the centre of divine favour, he would become an owner of blessings and can obtain salvation from all misunderstanding, just as we see the view of unification and equality of Masoomeen’s (a.s.) refusal.

Explanations of words and phrases in these verses

  1. 1

Difference of opinions are due to human nature. Whoever has been given intellect and the capability to reason and ponder will necessarily have difference of opinion. Lack of this will indicate doom of humanity that there was no unity of nature, but they indeed have difference of opinion with other people.

  2. 2

The Almighty has created people for mercy. Allah says, “You all be merciful to others just as I am merciful to you. I have not created you for controversies, that you remain involved in arguments all the time.” Astaghfirullah (I seek Allah’s forgiveness).

  3. 3

The past historians used to look for political angles in the incidents. The historians today search for economic and intellectual aspects. While the Holy Quran presents sketches of exhortation, advices and teachings. So that man should behave like man and live a life of a human being and that he should not become a political manipulator or a devotee of material wealth. Benefit: According to some scholars the 123rd ayat contains two basic teachings that aid the foundation of a complete way of life: (i) worship Allah and (ii) have complete faith in Him. This is the essence of shariat and the sign of the correct path.

Benefit: The 120th ayat is the proof that the Holy Quran is not a work of fiction. There are four purpose in the incidents quoted by the Quran. To make the heart comfortable, relating of the truth, Exhortation and the remembrance of Allah. These four are the basis of building up the human character.
